About The Mercy Foundation
Mission Statement:
Restoring hope through healthcare services and education.

Mission:
Celebrate life as a precious gift of God, prevent premature deaths in vulnerable populations, and restore hope in those who have lost hope from the burdens of society, disease or illness.

About The Mercy Foundation

The idea of a foundation was conceived in June 2001. Dr. Obeime was visiting one of her medical school professors in Nigeria when a man brought in a very ill looking patient.  The man could not pay the money needed for registration. In a brief conversation with the man, Dr. Obeime found that the patient, the man’s wife had been ill for about three days and was now dehydrated.  The husband had taken her to a nearby clinic where he was given a list of things to buy. These were intravenous fluid and the supplies to administer the fluid. The man reported that he had spent the entire day in search of a loan so he could treat his wife and had been unsuccessful.  He found his wife gasping when he returned and decided to transfer her to this facility for help even though he knew it would be more expensive.   Dr. Obeime offered to help pay for the treatment the patient would receive.

Unfortunately this help came too late and the patient died a few minutes later.  The man became very sad and cried out loud at God asking why he had been forsaken. As Dr. Obeime moved closer to console the man, she noticed a little boy about five years old tugging at the dead woman’s clothes asking her when she would feed him since he had not been fed all day.  This became unbearable for Dr Obeime who could not control her emotions at this time.   Dr. Obeime gave the man all the money she had, asking him to feed the child then make burial arrangement for his wife.

Dr. Obeime recalls that the man who felt God had forsaken him a few minutes earlier returned to his knees and thanked God for his merciful angel.  This incidence haunted Dr Obeime throughout her stay in Nigeria so much that by the time she landed at the airport in Indianapolis she had decided to do something to reduce premature deaths like this one.  She just needed to work at getting the support of her family and friends.

Back home in Indianapolis Dr. Obeime was struggling with getting the help she needed to help her poor obese patients loose weight. She found that patients who could pay for programs designed to teach life style modification had the best chance of keeping off excess weight regardless of how the weight was lost. This is how obesity prevention and education became part of the Mission Of Mercy.

The first project of the foundation in the United States will be to make available scholarships to indigent patients to attend the LEARN program at St. Francis Weight loss Center.  In Nigeria a health fair will be done to screen for diabetes, hypertension and HIV infection. The plan also includes screening of all pregnant women for HIV infection with the hope that treating with retroviral medications will reduce the rate at which babies born to HIV positive mothers are infected by HIV.
